Běijīng huānyíng nǐ

ni hao??
last friday saw history in the making. on an auspicious date 8.8.08 at 8pm, the world witnessed the pomp & pageantry displayed at the opening of the 29th olympiad event. held at the beijing national stadium (otherwise known as the birdsnest) it was a spectacular feast to behold. orchestrated by the acclaimed director, zhang yimou - it showcased to the world china's history, present & future. i can only imagine the live atmosphere as the drums are beat in unison, as the sounds of the guqin fills the night sky....

as the president, hu jintao welcomes the world & officiates the opening of the games, he does so in mandarin. the daughter asked why he did not speak english instead. why should he? the nation is proud of their culture & heritage. when in rome.....

as we watched the olympic torch being lit, we cannot help but feel a sense of pride & awe that a nation in asia has made their presence felt. maybe its also the fact that i am chinese (smiles). so heres to a fortnight of splendid showmanship (the samba boys doing their splendid moves), hot toned bods (check out the bums on the cuba volleyball team & you'll know what i mean) & friendly sportsmanship.
so have a good olympic fortnight as we watch the world put aside their differences to come as one world with one dream

to manage or not to manage

yet another interesting article came out in the media today "rural womenfolk to be trained as home managers" - local, especially the rural womenfolk will be given training on housekeeping to be gainfully employed as home managers (should not be referred to as 'domestic maids' as it had a negative connotation). this move is to provide employement for women agaed 18 years & above and at the same time to reduce the dependency on foreign maids which is now numbered circa 325,000. malaysians are hard pressed to get good home managers to take care of their homes, children & the elderly. it is said that locals would definitely be better as they understand the way of life here. there is no minimum pay set at this point of time but it is said that some very good educated home managers could be paid RM2000.

this of course sparked off a very interesting discussion among the deejays on a local radio station this morning. one asked 'why only the women? what about the men who aren't able to get jobs? can't they be home managers too?'. another disagreed & said that women do better job as they are more meticulous. of course listeners were invited to give their opinions. one guy said 'yeah guys do a better job'. one lady said 'nolah, men are so lazy. they won't do a good job'. and yet another male species said 'definitely women cos they love routine. men don't like routine so they would not find being a home manager very challenging' (don't know which lubang cacing this rat has been living in).

i mean its good that the relevant ministry is coming with solutions to create jobs for the locals. of course if given a choice between a local & foreign help, many a person would opt for the locals - no levy, renewal of passport, etc etc etc (not very informed on this area as my previous helps were local or indon who have been granted m'sian pr). as far the 'who would do a better job?' - it doesn't really matter. but thinking about the men (or the most of whom i know) i doubt they would do a very good job at it. yeah, they may be able to cook & clean when left alone to their own devices but be a domestic help? hmmm...

one guy (lets refer to him as latok) who was an ex-colleague was so damn lazy that he wouldn't even put a dirty plate in the sink for the office cleaner to wash. he used to brag that he & his wife did not have to lift a finger at home cos they have a maid (plus he's living with his in-laws). a group of us bought some fruits to be shared among the colleagues. the last to finish off the food was latok, so we told him to clear the stuff & left for home. the next day when we got back into the office, we saw the dirty plate (from the previous day) still on the table. so what we did was put the plate on his chair. i think he made a fuss about it but we told him off citing that he should probably bring his maid to the office.

what's the going rate these days for foreign maids - RM500 - RM800 for a foreign maid? would you then be willing to pay RM2000 for a local home manager? and how many households can actually afford to fork this kind of moolah for hired help?

someone i knew got a local 18 year old girl to work. okay, young girl can trainlah. one week into the job (not that she did much really cos she was still learning), she went back home for the raya celebrations. one week back in her kampung, she came back to kl. that very night she got back, she cried and said that she didn't want to work anymore & wanted to go back to her kampung to be with her parents. so, no choicelah send back lah.... then as replacement she got a bossy indonesia maid but since this one was pretty good at her job, had to stick it out till the friend coultn't take it anymore, quit her high paying job & is now a full time home minister.

i took a makcik from east m'sia who was looking for work in kl to be near her son (he was supposed to do his practical). a little bit controlling lah this woman, she used to ask me everytime i went out - who, what, why, when till i told her that even my hubby wouldn't ask me so many questions. then she got news that her son was posted for practical in pahang. when we brought her back to the in-laws place, she wanted to stay back with my mom-in-law to take religious classes. then we sent her back to celebrate raya with her family; when we asked her if she wanted to take a longer holiday so that she could spend more time with her family she thought we were indirectly firing her. so one week into her holiday, she called me & informed me that she's not coming back to work. how???

for those who can afford to quit their job & become full time home ministers, it is an honorable sacrifice to make; and most have made it without an ounce of regret. for those who can't but make an effort to juggle the work & the home, they deserve utmost respect & appreciation.....

a little sensitivity please....

it's not easy living in a multi-racial community. there are the aspects of the religion, beliefs and cultures we ought to know (or at least make the effort to know) & respect; and when situation warrants to adhere to.

since young i have had a wide circle of friends ranging from the chinese to the indians, the malays to the lain-lain. yes, they do things, believe & cultures are different from mine but we got along just fine. it is not unusual to see a group of multi-ethnic students / colleagues hanging around talking in a multitude of languages. along the way, we picked up their languages as well (as usual, the process of learning another language is you learn the foul words first). so yeah, we could swear & curse in an array of colorful languages. and the best part of it all is we don't take it to heart cos at the end of the day there is no hate or malicious intent. another plus was when it comes to the different festivals, we would go visiting & at the same time indulge in the popular local past-time - pigging out!!

just today i read in the papers about a teacher who was accused of hurling racial slurs at her indian students has been transferred out to a different school. she supposedly regretted her actions & apologized but did not expect it to be so serious. duh!!?? are these the kind of people we want teaching our children in school??

the daughter had previously mentioned a teacher in her school who also is quite a racist. when she told her dad & me what the teacher said, we wanted to lodge a report against her. but the daughter did not want to create trouble so we thought we'd give it another chance. but we told her that if the teacher ever did the same thing again, we will not hesitate to do something about it. so far, no stories yet or maybe the daughter is afraid to tell us....

i mean honestly each and every one of us have our personal opinions, likes or dislikes about the other (be it of a different race or religion) but one spoilt person does not the entire community make. we learn to filter them out, be tolerant & adapt for a harmonious life.

when life gives you lemons

you know how it is when you are facing various situations in life? when something good happens, you are all happy & dandy. but when shiate happens, you curse & swear and ask 'why me?'. has anyone actually asked 'why not me?'

well, i have been through many ups & downs. of course, when it is up, i am all happy & thank the one above. when its all bad, i mope & am so depressed. but i always try to see the silver lining (however faint it may seem) behind the gray & gloomy cloud. i am a firm believer of everything happens for a reason. and sure enough, the silver lining reveals itself & at the end of it all, i am grateful for what happened when it did.

yes it may seem a pain & downright annoying that people may seem so positive & cheery all the time. but it is tougher to remain calm & positive when you are faced with such challenges. so when life throws you lemons, what do you do?

so go ahead and ask her
for happy ever after
cause nobody knows what's coming
so why not take a chance on loving
come on, pour the glass and tempt me
either half-full or half-empty
cause if it all comes down to flavor
the glass is tipping in my favor

life gave me lemonade
and i can't imagine why
born on a sunny day
beneath a tangerine sky
i live life without pretending
i'm a sucker for happy endings
thanks for the lemondade
thanks for the lemonade

now take your time to answer me
for the beauty of romancing
is to calm your trembling hand with mine
while begging love to fill your eyes
i can hardly breathe while waiting
to find out what your heart is saying
and as we're swirling in this flavor
the world is tilting in our favor

life gave me lemonade
and i can't imagine why
born on a sunny day
beneath a tangerine sky
i live life without pretending
i'm a sucker for happy endings
thanks for the lemondade
thanks for the lemonade

i've got it made
rest in the shade
and hold my love
while god above stirs with a spoon
we share the moon
smile at the bees
more sugar please
he really loves us after all
we're gonna need another straw
and i can't imagine why
born on a sunny day beneath a tangerine sky
i live life without pretending
i'm a sucker for happy endings
thanks for the lemonade
thanks for the lemonade

what i thought - the mummy: tomb of the dragon emperor

have never really been a fan of brendan fraser but somehow caught 'the mummy' movies one (the mummy) & two (the mummy returns). when the latest installment was released, it wasn't like i had ants in my pants wanting to watch it. i'll just wait for astro to show it & if i miss it or one of thousandth repeat, who cares... or so i thought.

hubby wanted to watch it so okaylah, we'll go. what did i think of the movie? its forgettable, thats what. i can only remember brendan fraser, jet li (in my opinion the only saving grace in the movie but alas! he only appeared like in the beginning & near the ending), michelle yeo (someone got her mistaken as michelle wee - i was like 'who is michelle wee? how is wee yeo??' needless to say that someone was annoyed!!), & errr, yeah thats that.

no rachel weisz. the replacement is some maria bello (saw her biography, couldn't place her movies until i saw coyote ugly. she played the hot hot bar owner). but in this movie, she didn't anything close to hot. don't believe me ah? see for yourself lah....and she looks better blond (something like molly sims, no? who is that? go search the internet lah you lazy bum!!). pic one is her in the mummy, pic two in coyote ugly & pic three is where she looks like molly sims.

so the story in a nutshell (sock it lah, i'll just copy, paste from some website & edit) - rick (brendan fraser) returns to combat the resurrected han emporer (jet li) & his terracota warriors, joined by his son alex (luke ford), wife evelyn (maria bello), her brother jonanthan (john hannah), a sorceress (michelle yeoh) with her two thousand year old daughter (isabella leong) & football kicking touchdown dancing yetis.

the jokes are no longer funny, there is no chemistry between the casts & there is nothing evil about the dragon emperor. geez.... what a waste of forty bucks!! takpelah, the hubby belanja.

a blurry weekend

as usual, the weekend started on friday when the daughter goes for her music classes. decided to catch a late night movie so went and bought tickets to 'the mummy - tomb of the dragon emperor' (thats another story all together).

same ole same ole - had dinner, walked around a bit & headed on home. hubs went to the range to sweat it out a bit, the daughter & the niece lounging around doing their own thing and i caught a quick shower & a few zzz before the late show.

so quarter past eleven, we headed for the cinema. inched our way to look for parking till we settled for one that made us walk like a mile (or so it seemed) to the halls. so okay, we watched the movie (without falling asleep although i think i almost did), walked to the car looking forward to a nice warm cozy bed. shitty luck though, the car couldn't be unlocked. something was bloody wrong with the alarm. so there we were at 230am in the middle of an almost empty parking lot trying to unlock the car.

i had to call the daughter to come with the niece in my car to pick us up. went home, changed the batteries on the alarm (you know the thing with the keys), went back to the abandoned car hoping it was indeed a weak battery problem. press press press (and a hundred times more after that), but to no avail. agh!!! it was like 345am & we were still there.

so decided to leave the car at the parking lot & tend to it later in the morning. went home, finally got to bed at about 4am. two hours later the stupid alarm clock rang - sigh!! hubby had to send the niece to campus. thereafter the bloody phone rang & hubby went to the mechanics at about 900am.

the daughter had tuition later in the morning so no chance of sleeping till noon or catching up on lost snooze....so we practically breezed through the whole of saturday & part of sunday morning in a semi-comatose state. still sleepy...... :-(

oh yeah, hubby had to get the entire alarm system changed to a brand new one. blur blur blur...
